Taiwan
Taiwan was formerly known as Formosa and is the home of Oolong tea. Formosa comes from the Portuguese for ‘wonderful island’ and the Taiwanese have kept this name for their wonderful tea in the same way that Sri Lankans kept Ceylon to describe theirs. The first tea plants were grown here in 1650 and since an impressive tea culture has developed, producing many fine examples.
